The Nokia 5110 is a basic graphic LCD screen for lots of applications. It was originally intended for as a cell phone screen. This one is mounted on an easy to solder PCB.

It uses the PCD8544 controller, which is the same used in the Nokia 3310 LCD. The PCD8544 is a low power CMOS LCD controller/driver, designed to drive a graphic display of 48 rows and 84 columns. All necessary functions for the display are provided in a single chip, including on-chip generation of LCD supply and bias voltages, resulting in a minimum of external components and low power consumption. The PCD8544 interfaces to microcontrollers through a serial bus interface.

 

1. Power supply voltage: 2.7V-3.3V, 5V is OK, but part of the screen becomes black when tested.

2. Data interface level: 2.7-5V.

3. Backlight power supply voltage: highest 3.3V.

4. Module size: 43.6mm x 43.1mm (width X height).

5. Installation diameter: 2 mm.

6. 84 X 48 Pixels LCD.

7. Transfer rate up to 4Mbps, can full speed write display data without waiting time.

8. Can use the conductive glue to connect the module with the printed board, without connecting cable. The metal hooks on the module can fix the module on the printed board, which is very easy to install and replace.

9. Low power supply, the working current in normal situation is lower than 200μA, and has power-down mode.

Here is how you wire the LCD directly to a 3.3V microcontroller.

Here is how you wire the LCD using 10k ohm resistors for current limiting. With the exception of the SCE/CS pin wired in green, which uses 1k ohm.


Here is how you wire the LCD using logic level converters. The SCE/CS pin shown in green is tied low in this example. To use other devices your SPI bus you'll have to wire this to a logic input as well.

Note: The LEDs are not connected in these examples. The LED pin consists of 4 Blue LEDs which draw ~80mA total. To drive either wire directly to 3.3V or to control connect to a transistor + microcontroller pin.
