Our Holy Crosses

The series For Nation and Country was born out of an inner desire, a personal need, I might say, to recount the stories of Romanian soldiers on the Eastern Front during World War II. This series is composed of six volumes. The first three are dedicated to the land campaign, the fourth volume for the air forces, the fifth book deals with the naval warfare, and the last volume, the sixth, is dedicated to the Romanian prisoners of war deported to the Siberian camps. All the six volumes will seek to show the reader a small part of the life of our forefathers who participated in a holy war against atheistic Bolshevism, which had taken a large part of our national territory by force in 1940, and which was the general opinion of the Romanian people at that time. My intention is to bring to the reader's attention every campaign, every place where blood was fought and shed, and thus remind us of our duty to remember and honor our forefathers, their sacrifices, especially those who fought during these three years and two months on the Eastern Front. Considering that the military losses suffered by the Romanian Army on the Eastern Front totaled 624,740 soldiers, of whom 71,585 were dead, 243,622 wounded and sick, and 309,533 missing and prisoners of war, it seems to me that the attitude of the authorities and, consequently, of the population, is one of negligence, carelessness and forgetfulness. Which is absolutely shameful for all of us. We are, after all, the descendants of all those who sacrificed.
