For his fourth album, British pop-soul singer Paul Young expands his traditional format of R&B covers and smooth originals to include a few new wrinkles, including a surprisingly commanding reinterpretation of Free's hard-rockin' "A Little Bit of Love" and the excellent jazz-tinged duet with Chaka Khan, "Heaven Can Wait." Other highlights include a sparse rendition of Bobby Womack's classic "Stop On By" and the lovely "Softly Whispering I Love You." The album's highest point--and possibly the pinnacle of Young's career--is a definitive cover of the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl." Young's performance here is direct and heartbreaking, the arrangement spacious enough to give his controlled and restrained voice room in which to work. Young is one of the finest blue-eyed-soul singers of his generation, a position only solidified by OTHER VOICES.
