The best pop music is packed full of contradictions and Polarkreis 18 are no exception. The Dresden six-piece blend euphoric synth pop with evocative guitar lines and make tunes that appeal equally to diehard clubbers and daytime radio listeners. They cite experimental Krautrockers Can as a major influence (and even cover that seminal band’s track "Mother Sky") and yet they make music that straddles the mainstream. Polarkreis 18 are Felix Räuber, Christian Grochau, Silvester Wenzel, Ludwig Bauer, Philipp Makolies and Uwe Pasora. The band came into being in 2004, emerging from the ashes of Jack Of All Trades, a previous incarnation formed when its members were aged just 13. Polarkreis 18 released their self-titled debut album in 2007, announcing them as a band to watch. A year on, the European release of album two, The Colour of Snow, realised that potential in stunning style, propelled by the single "Allein Allein", which spent five weeks at number one in their home country and breached the top 10 across much of mainland Europe.
