The Silver Collection is a strange little assortment of Robert Palmer material from his middle period, between the 1979 album Secrets -- where he scored his first minor U.S. hit (and a medium-sized one in the U.K.) with "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)" -- and the album Pride, issued in 1983 just before his monstrous smash with the Riptide album and its single "Addicted to Love." The other tracks here come from the albums Clues and Maybe It's Live. Nothing here is unworthy, and all of it reveals what an amazingly diverse talent Palmer was, not only as a singer but as a songwriter. This is for those folks who have all the smashes and feel Palmer's career really began in 1985. A better overview of the period is to be had on The Island Years 1974-1985, which goes back even further than this -- but for the money, this is a nice little slice.
