D. H. Ambani started the Reliance Group in the year 1958. It is the biggest private company in India. It has businesses in the energy value chain and the materials value chain. Backward vertical integration has been a key part of how Reliance has grown and changed over time. Starting with textiles in the late 1970s, Reliance used a strategy called backward vertical integration in polyester, fiber intermediates, plastics, petrochemicals, petroleum refining, and oil and gas exploration and production to be fully integrated along the materials and energy value chain.
