Though specific to its time and place the film’s issues have a direct bearing on our Tiger economy and our historically unique rising tide of immigration.\r\n\r\nRunning at 52 mins 25 secs Leaving Transylvania was nearly five years in the making and is a glowing testament to the ability and determination of Dieter Auner. It is also very beautiful. Despite its grim and doleful sounding subject matter it is a love poem, in vivid colour, to Auner’s original homeland.\r\n\r\nDieter Auner says, “This film explores the characteristics of the Transylvanian Saxons yet applies to a universal theme worth reflecting on: the disorientation of individuals experiencing their culture in decline.” Dieter pretty much counts as a “local boy” as the former physics student left Germany for Galway in 1996 and is a well known and respected stills photographer with an impressive list of credits on everything from Ros na Run to Macnas, Druid and Cuirt. His solo photographic exhibitions include: “Have You Seen Dracula?” forGAF’s 21st Birthday and shows in the USA, Germany and Romania.
